News

Due to the COVID19 outbreak many restrictions remain in place for all County Parks (Genesee County Park & Forest and the DeWitt Recreation Area):

At this time, the County Parks are open.  Social distancing and masks are required where there could be a number of people present.  Bathrooms throughout the park are open and are being sanitized twice a day.  Playgrounds are open.  Pavilions are open, but you will notice that they are set up in keeping with the current maximum allowable number of people.  The park is again taking reservations for reduced capacity pavilion rentals.

The Interpretive Nature Center will reopen to the public Saturday July 11th.   The following measures will be in place in accordance with state and federal guidelines to stop the spread of COVID-19:
Visitors will be asked not to visit if they are not feeling well.

All visitors will be required to wear a face mask upon entry to the center and maintain 6 feet of social distance at all times.

Number of visitors will be limited to 33% capacity of the center.

Frequently touched surfaces including bathrooms will be cleaned and sanitized in accordance with CDC guidelines.

Interpretive Nature Center space will be adapted to social distancing (fewer chairs available to sit in, closure of the Discovery Zone puppet theater, etc.)

Signs will direct visitors on how to maintain social distancing and practice proper hygiene.

Hand sanitizing stations will be available for visitors, volunteers and staff.

Visitors will be asked to sign in to provide contact tracing if needed.

All program activities will be held outdoors whenever possible

The County Park and the Dewitt Recreation area have played a large role in the county and community's response to the health crisis and the new restrictions on our lives.  Park usage for hiking, biking, and just enjoying has been up significantly over the last few months - particularly at DeWitt, as many citizens have wanted to enjoy that part of the new
 Ellicott Trail.

Park staff have continued to work tirelessly 'behind the scenes', even with reduced staffing requirements, to ensure that our parks can be a safe and healthy and invigorating place to enjoy nature. And now that park staffing is complete, all efforts are being made to continue to keep our parks beautiful and safe.  If you haven't recently, come to either or both park areas, and enjoy!

Please practice social distancing and adhere to the gathering rules our NYS Governor has put in place.

Many of these occur with the assistance of ACORNS volunteers.
Teachers, scout leaders, church groups, and others are invited to call 585-344-1122 for 2019 program information.
Check our EVENTS page or the County Parks website, for information on upcoming events.  AND, if you want even more park information, click on "Seedlings", the park's newsletter.
